Reading

I love that our kids love to read. Brian is an awesome reader now, but he has been absolutely driven to read from an early age. Honor is coming along nicely, but she is more distracted, and thinks she already knows everything, so while her reading is very good, probably on-level or above, she hasn't been as driven to push as hard as Brian did. She's getting there though, and has finally started to work harder at reading of her own free will.

Yesterday Honor tried to read a Teen Titan comic book to her daddy, and she did a very good job of it. Actually, I guess it was a Tiny Titans comic book. Probably equivalent to a Level 2, reader book. We try to encourage our kids to read everything, books, comics, and magazines.. reading needs to be fun or they won't want to do it. So far, so good. I think our kids enjoy books!

Some of the books i read as a child are among those i tote along from country to country around the globe.

Good for you for encouraging your kids to read anything. It always bugs me when people dismiss certain types of reading materials as "not good enough."

I agree with encouraging kids to read anything.

I just love to read and it's part of my day. I always have a book or magazine by my bed and that's how I end my day. I also start it that way on Saturday and Sundays. I just don't understand people that don't love to read.

One of the saddest things I ever saw was a mom berating her kids in a used book shop that also carried comics... they wanted to choose some comics out of the 'free bin', the mom said "You can't read any of that junk, comics are trashy!" ... as she walked to the register with an armload of sleazy romance and pulp crime stories... which I'm not against, books are books, but what a hypocrite! I wanted to say something, but it was clear that this woman was completely close-minded - I couldn't have said anything to help those boys (sure wish I could have slipped them some books though!)

As far as Im concerned reading is reading. Reading was a bit of a struggle for our eldest, who is profoundly deaf, he read a lot of comics...still does...plus a lot of non fiction also books with lots of pictures and diagrams perfect for a visual child. Mac read The Davinci Code when he was 10 and enjoyed discussing it with all my friends who were reading it at the time. Back then finding appropriate subjects at his level was tricky sometimes for eg I made him wait til last year to read The Lovely Bones even though he began asking at 10. He is reading Salman Rushdie's midnights children at the moment but loves the Simpsons comics and has every Lemony Snicket (which he still rereads)in his bookshelf. We all read Lauren Child (even now!!) and classics like Dr Seuss especially for the simple rhyming and awesome pictures. Reading should be about enjoyment so provide them with plenty of examples of every kind of reading material and let them read what they enjoy I say.

I recently started to read some of my favorite childhood classics to Miss 7 - she loves to be read a chapter or 2 before bed (although she is an avid reader herself) and I am excited that she loves the same stories that I did.. so long ago.

I really think that half the battle is won if you can give a child a love of reading..

I still give my parents a hard time that their biggest problem with me when I was young that I liked to stay up too late...so I could read.

Tough life.

Good for you. I tried so hard with my boys, and only one out of three picked up books on his own. The others always had to be forced. So sad. Wish I knew the secret.
