Snow Days to Share

As it had been cold and threatening snow off and on, the kids’ grandparents bought Brian and Honor their first ever sleds, and the weather did not disappoint! What fun that we actually had enough snow accumulate, while they were still visiting us, so they could enjoy the sleds with the kids!

Without snow, a sled does not slide well.. even with proper encouragement and directions from Grandpa! BTW - This bit of goofing off happened right after we went to the store and came home with the sleds, we didn’t actually go out to sled with no snow!

Technically, the snow before Thanksgiving wasn’t the first of the year. We had a little a week or so prior. Not enough to stick, but enough to count.

But the snow that we had before Thanksgiving gave us enough accumulation to actually play in.

After living in the desert so long, my poor truck barely knows what to do here. We had one night where the temperature dropped into the 20’s fast and the poor truck kept setting off it’s alarm! “Help! It’s too cold!” I also had to WD40 the doors and door seals because the driver door froze shut (and then froze open!) another day.

This is one of my favorite photos. Honor, in a Kuwait embassy shirt, enjoying the drastically different weather here in Maryland!

The neighbor’s horses were out in the snow too.

Some of our other ‘neighbors’ came to visit.

I love snow on tree branches!

Honor was the first to venture out. Ninja was not sure that this was a good idea.

20141126_13385820141126_133913

Actually, she thought it was a very iffy idea and let us know, loudly.

20141126_133937

Honor brought her a snowball, but Ninja was not impressed.

So Honor went sledding. It’s not much of a slope… but enough to have fun on.

20141126_134134

Hmm? Not having done this before… how to start?

20141126_13423320141126_13425720141126_13425820141126_13425920141126_134312

Ninja is still concerned…

20141126_134305

And you know that Grandpa had to get in on the fun.

20141126_13461320141126_134652

Of course, Brian was out there too.

And then they were off to find the best slopes on the property!

The front yard has obstacles, but more downhill spots. Grandma came out and joined in.

Brad didn’t miss out.

20141126_13523520141126_135325

Not very steep, and not much snow, but we were able to go quite some distance down the hill here, even with this little bit of slush.

Grandpa and Honor sledding -

No, he didn’t pour that on his sister… he’s a nice brother!

20141126_13572120141126_135738

See. What an awesome brother.

20141126_13575020141126_135827

Paying her brother back… what goes around comes around!

20141126_13583920141126_135844

There were a few snowballs tossed. Not many… it was too wet and gooey!

Grandpa has another turn

For awhile, we retreated into the warm house to dry off and relax. More knitting lessons for Ninja.

But Honor and I went out again later. She finally convinced me to give it a go. It was tough because my ankle was badly sprained. Just getting down on the sled was an adventure, and yes, I was sledding with a cane. I needed it to get off the ground at the other end (not a graceful endeavor at all)! brrrrr!

20141126_160938

Honor helping me out. Poor broken mom!

20141126_161009

Fancy action shot…

20141126_163847

I opened my balcony door at one point to fix the screen door, and Pixie decided to hop out and look around. You can tell she wasn’t too impressed with cold wet feet… one lap and hopped back inside again!

20141126_170427

And somehow in all of this, we managed to make a Thanksgiving feast! It was so nice to have George and Susan here to share it with us!

We got a similar dusting in Ankara, but ours came at night and crystallized immediately into ice. Boo! It looks like you all made a great time of enjoying the sled despite inches. Best and first cane sledding I ever heard of! Maybe there will be more snowfall in the near future for better play for us both. Fast healing for that ankle of yours!

I almost wish this had been a been colder and icier - except that makes the roads dangerous, so no - but this was such a slushy WET snow that we got cold and messy! But it was still a whole lot of fun! It doesn't look like we'll get a white Christmas. Right now, we're having a warm and rainy Christmas Eve. I hope that you and your family have wonderful and happy holidays!
